This program will assist the participant in focusing on critical areas and problems associated with communication center call-taking and dispatching. Effort will be spent looking at the specific communication center environment and discussing the special skills and techniques required of personnel engaged in these functions and fulfillment of their duties. Special skills and techniques will be discussed along with the necessary attributes for communication center personnel. By the conclusion of the program, participants should have a better understanding of (1) role of communications in public safety; (2) communication center environment: staffing, stress, and personal rewards; (3) ethics and integrity in communications; (4) call-taker roles and responsibilities--accountability to community and department; (5) telephone techniques and CAD entries; (6) challenges of language barriers including foreign, slang, and cultural differences; (7) dispatcher roles and responsibilities in terms of community needs and officer safety; (8) keys to effective communication for the radio operator; (9) radio language: code and professional demeanor; (10) effective pre-arrival instructions; and (11) liability issues for the call-taker and radio operator.
