This one day course is designed to familiarize officers and other first responders with current best practices regarding responses to people with mental illnesses. Emphasis will be on safe, effective and professional concerns of the first responder when handling individuals with mental illness in crisis, distress or other circumstances. Instruction will utilize practical demonstrations and exercises approaching and communicating with individuals suffering from Mood, Anxiety, Personality and Psychotic Disorders along with Alzheimer’s Disease and other mental health issues. Facts and myths, signs and symptoms, helpful “dos and don'ts” and safe practices will be addressed.
