Licensing Dogs and Cats - Pet Tips

Dog License The Atlantic County Animal Shelter would like to remind pet owners that all dogs in New Jersey must be licensed by the age of seven months in the municipality where the owner lives. Although the State does not currently require that cats be licensed, individual municipalities may mandate the licensing of cats as well. (See list below) Dog and cat licenses must be renewed annually. Proof of a valid rabies vaccination is necessary to obtain a license for your pet.

Licensing is important to control the spread of rabies and to ensure that persons who are bitten by a cat or dog can easily determine whether the animal has an up to date rabies vaccine. Fees generated from dog and cat licenses are contributed to the statewide Animal Population Control Program. The funds are used to assist eligible residents in obtaining low cost spay/neuter services.

When you receive your new license, please attach it to your pet's collar. In the event that your pet becomes lost, the license number will allow your pet to be traced to you. Contact your municipality for more information about pet licensing in your area. For additional information about responsible pet ownership, contact the Atlantic County Animal Shelter at (609) 485-2345.
