MENTORING THE NEW OR UNDERACHIEVING OFFICER
Individuals assigned the task of mentoring a new or underachieving officer have a variety of challenges in ensuring all efforts are undertaken to ensure a productive officer for the agency. This program will explore various principles and techniques that training officers and other assigned personnel might utilize in the teaming up with agency officers and to work on areas where improvement is necessary so field performance might be optimize to a greater degree. Topics include: (1) recognizing officers in need mentoring before it is too late; (2) understanding the role of a mentor, including planning, organizing, directing, implementing, and evaluating activities; (3) overview of effective counseling techniques; (4) adult learning principles including use of auditory, visual, and kinesthetic; (5) essential skills that mentors must have which include, strong interpersonal skills, team building abilities and communication skills; (6) overview of proper documentation necessary during the mentoring phase; and (7) how to effectively deal with different generations of officers INSTRUCTOR: Chief Michael Miller, Ventnor City Police Department, Ventnor City, New Jersey.
