Police Training Center

 Personal Radiation Detector Class

This course is designed to train law enforcement and public safety officers to employ department-procured and issued personal radiation detectors (PRD's) within the bounds of the jurisdiction/agency operational environment, including local instruments, procedures, and legal considerations. This course provides training and extensive hands-on practice with real radioactive materials so the personnel employing a PRD in detection and interdiction missions with be able to: 1) Detect and locate the presence of radiation and or radiological material. 2) After receiving an alarm, identify and distinguish between false alarms due to; background radiation, legitimate causes, illicit radiological/nuclear material. 3) Upon detecting, locating and assessing the alarm, measure the approximate radiation level that generated the alarm. 4) Use radiological/nuclear material recognition factors to assist in the assessing the situation. 5) Upon discovering the illicit use of radiological/nuclear material, initiate organizational protocols to ensure the health and safety of responders and the public.
Notice: Live Radiological Materials (RAM) will be utilized and stored during the course. The RAM is low level and following all safe guards, posses no health hazard to anyone involved.

This course is being delivered by the Counter Terrorism Operations Support (CTOS) Program of National Security Technologies, LLC for the United States Department of Energy and the Department of Homeland Security
