The state has been inspecting the bridge every three months to ensure its safety. Prior to today’s inspection the bridge had last been inspected before the beginning of this year and was not found to be unsafe for travel at that time.
Atlantic County has been working with the state Department of Environmental Protection and the Army Corps of Engineers for permitting approvals. Construction was originally scheduled to begin as early as July but will now be delayed for a few months due to the rigors of bridge permitting.
