Atlantic County Begins Pre-Construction Activities for New York Avenue Bridge Replacement in Hamilton Township

Atlantic County is beginning pre-construction activities for the emergency replacement of the New York Avenue bridge in Hamilton Township (HML-66) The bridge was closed to traffic in February after a field inspection found structural damage that was confirmed by an engineering underwater dive team.

The design phase for the bridge over Gravelly Run, between Reega Avenue and Route 40, has been completed and a $1.43 million contract was awarded to RE Pierson Construction Co. of Pilesgrove, NJ through an emergency contract process.

Pre-construction activities include tree trimming within the township right-of-ways to allow for clearance of cranes and other construction equipment, installation of soil erosion and sediment control measures, site clearing, and demolition of the existing bridge.

The new pre-fabricated bridge sections are expected to be delivered before the end of October. The county was able to have the company begin fabrication of the bridge prior to having the contractor selected to help expedite the project.

Barring any delays due to inclement weather, approved change orders or supply shortages, the county is on schedule to have the bridge substantially completed and re-opened to traffic before the end of the year.  A project like this, under normal conditions, would take as long as three years from design to completion. When the county was unexpectedly forced to close the bridge for safety reasons, officials stated they would do everything they could to reduce the duration of the closure and its impact on motorists.
