National Voter Registration Day - Tuesday, September 22

On Tuesday, September 22, 2020, the Atlantic County Superintendent of Elections Office will join with thousands of other election officials across the country to celebrate National Voter Registration Day, a civic holiday that aims to help all eligible voters participate in our democracy. The nonpartisan day of action will involve coordinated field, technology, and media efforts to register voters and raise awareness of state-specific registration policies, deadlines, and voting information.

To help ensure the further success of the holiday, Atlantic County Superintendent of Elections & Commissioner of Registration, Maureen Bugdon, is calling on community partners in Atlantic County to join in this effort by hosting a virtual registration drive on National Voter Registration Day.  “Online voter registration is now available in New Jersey, making it easier than ever to register to vote,” remarks Bugdon. “We encourage our community partners and residents to visit www.Vote.NJ.gov to check their Voter Registration status and/or Register to Vote from their computer, tablet or smart phone.  It’s the fastest way to ensure you are eligible for the upcoming November 3rd General Election.”  Online Voter Registration in New Jersey was introduced in early September with over 50,000 individuals taking advantage of the online offering in the first 2 weeks alone.

“National Voter Registration Day serves as a fabulous reminder for high schools, colleges, community groups and other organizations to get involved civically.  2020 is a milestone year, commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage (the right of women to vote in elections), as well as it being a Presidential election cycle,” Bugdon states.  Covid-19 impacted Voter Registration numbers earlier this year and New Jersey’s online voter registration process is a great way to counter some of that impact.  “Atlantic County is honored to once again join in this national effort and we invite you to visit www.Vote.NJ.gov in order to register and participate in America’s voting franchise.”

National Voter Registration Day is held on the fourth Tuesday of every September. Since 2012, nearly 3 million voters have registered on the holiday. The holiday has been endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS), the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED), the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC) and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).
