Atlantic County Reports First Death Related to COVID-19

The Atlantic County Division of Public Health has confirmed the county’s first COVID-19 related fatality in an Egg Harbor Township man in his late 50s.

“The patient had a history of underlying health conditions that put him at greater risk for complications from the coronavirus,” stated Public Health Officer Patricia Diamond.

Public health officials also confirmed 11 additional residents have tested positive as of this morning, Thursday, April 2, bringing the total to 52 COVID-19 cases countywide. Today’s confirmations include five men, ranging in age from 15 to 70 years; and six females, ages 25 to 76 years.

Residents are reminded to remain vigilant and help reduce the spread of the virus by staying home and practicing safe respiratory and hygiene habits as well as to follow the recommended guidance for social distancing.

There is currently no vaccine or treatment for this virus. Those who experience mild or moderate symptoms such as fever, cough, aches and pains, are advised to stay at home, self-isolate and monitor their symptoms. Most recover within two or more weeks. Individuals with more severe symptoms including fever, cough and shortness of breath, and who may have underlying health conditions including heart or lung disease, diabetes or a compromised immune system, should contact their medical provider.
