Update: New York Avenue Bridge Replacement in Hamilton Township

Atlantic County is beginning pre-construction activities for the emergency replacement of the New York Avenue bridge in Hamilton Township (HML-66) The bridge was closed to traffic in February after a field inspection found structural damage that was confirmed by an engineering underwater dive team.

The design phase for the bridge over Gravelly Run, between Reega Avenue and Route 40, has been completed and a $1.43 million contract was awarded to RE Pierson Construction Co. of Pilesgrove, NJ through an emergency contract process.

Pre-construction activities include tree trimming within the township right-of-ways to allow for clearance of cranes and other construction equipment, installation of soil erosion and sediment control measures, site clearing, and demolition of the existing bridge.

The new pre-fabricated bridge sections are expected to be delivered before the end of October. The county was able to have the company begin fabrication of the bridge prior to having the contractor selected to help expedite the project.

Barring any delays due to inclement weather, approved change orders or supply shortages, the county is on schedule to have the bridge substantially completed and re-opened to traffic before the end of the year.  A project like this, under normal conditions, would take as long as three years from design to completion. When the county was unexpectedly forced to close the bridge for safety reasons, officials stated they would do everything they could to reduce the duration of the closure and its impact on motorists.

Green Bank Bridge, Mullica Township

As of August 25 through September 30, in cooperation with the US Coast Guard, the Green Bank Bridge over the Mullica River between Atlantic and Burlington counties is scheduled to open every hour on the hour, Monday through Friday, 9 AM – 9 PM and on signal 7-9 AM and 9-11 PM. On Friday through Sunday and federal holidays, bridge openings are scheduled on the hour and half hour, 9 AM – 9 PM.

The purpose of this schedule is to effectively balance the needs of motorists, including emergency response vehicles, and marine vessels.

Motorists may experience delays during scheduled bridge openings and should plan travel time accordingly or seek an alternate route.

Eighth Street Bridge, Folsom

 

Beginning on or about Tuesday, April 13 until further notice, the Eighth Street bridge over Penny Pot Stream in Folsom Borough, between Blue Anchor Road (CR 561) and Second Road (CR 559), will be closed to traffic after an inspection revealed extensive damage to the superstructure of the bridge, mandating its closure until the bridge can be replaced.

A full detour for Eighth Street will be in effect. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and plan travel time accordingly.

UPDATE - New York Avenue Bridge, Hamilton Township

Atlantic County is scheduled to issue a Notice to Proceed as of March 24 for design work for the New York Avenue Bridge in Hamilton Township, the first step in the construction of a bridge replacement.

The New York Avenue bridge over Gravelly Run, between Reega Avenue and Route 40, was closed to traffic in February after a field inspection found structural damage that was confirmed by an engineering underwater dive team.

The design phase of the project will take several months and be followed by a bidding process and contract award, Construction could begin in the fall.

The damage assessment by an engineering underwater dive team revealed extensive damage to the superstructure of the bridge, requiring its closure.
