A basic two-day seminar for the designated public information officer, chief, assistant chief or other agency individual who serve as a spokesperson for their department with the media during an event involving wide community interest or concern. The seminar is oriented is primarily for those with little formal training on dealing with the media and will present fundamental information to assist such personnel to enhance their skills in serving as the liaison between their department and the media. Topics to be presented over the two days include: (1) role/goal of a public information officer; (2) legal aspects and repercussions of disseminating information; (3) writing news releases that have impact and get noticed; (4) handling tricky questions; (5) never having to say "no comment"; (6) State Public Records Law; (7) building a solid relationship with local reporters; (8) using the media to your advantage; (9) being "on call"--a necessary part of the job; and (10) handling the intense media spotlight when a tragedy or major case occurs.
