In addition to the Labor Day holiday observance, most Atlantic County government offices will be closed on Friday, September 2 for reasons of economy as county employees observe a furlough day. The Superior Court of New Jersey, however, will remain open as well as 24-hour county government operations such as the jail, the Meadowview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and county transportation.
“We had hoped to avoid implementing any furlough days for our employees but they became necessary to avoid layoffs and stabilize the county tax rate,” stated County Executive Dennis Levinson.
The county was notified after its budget passed in March that it would have to come up with an additional $3.4 million on top of the $7.3 million budgeted just to cover successful tax appeals, mostly from Atlantic City casinos. Unfortunately the PILOT bill that was approved earlier this year only covers tax appeals from 2015 and beyond, not those from 2009 through 2014, many of which are still pending.
“No one is happy about furloughs but the current economic circumstances left us little choice,” added Levinson. “We attempted to soften the blow by incorporating the furlough along with the Labor Day holiday but it is still very tough on many of our employees and their families.”
